MADE WITH HEART IN TOWNSVILLE
50 Years of Pies.
One Obsession: Getting It Right.
Mal's Pies & Pastries has been a Townsville institution for over 50 years. What started as a humble local bakery in Oonoonba grew into something the whole city claims as their own — a place where tradies grab breakfast before the sun's fully up, where families make it a Saturday ritual, and where locals bring visitors just to prove that yes, you can get a world-class pie in North Queensland.
The bakery at 56 Abbott Street has been in its current home for over 30 years. Today, it's run by Brock — who, funnily enough, started out as just another customer. He moved to Townsville, fell in love with the pies, and when the bakery came up for sale, didn't think twice. Now he leads a team of 25 staff including six dedicated bakers who show up before dawn to make sure the cabinet is always full.
No shortcuts. No frozen pastry. No cutting corners on the filling. Just proper baking, done properly, every single day.
With 25 staff, six bakers, family pies available to take home and freeze, and a community-first attitude that shows up in everything from pie drives to local fundraisers — Mal's isn't just a bakery. It's part of the fabric of Townsville.
Could quite easily be the best bakery in Australia… fresh food, wild range of choices, excellent friendly service.— Ant Milne, Google Review
